Finding “your why”, what does that even mean? You will usually hear this terminology around starting a business; it’s when you identify the core purpose, motivation, or belief that drives you.
It’s about understanding the deeper reasons behind your actions, goals, and decisions.
Your why acts as a personal compass, guiding your choices and helping you align what truly matters to you. That said, it doesn’t have to relate to those looking to start a business. It could also be related to a college student figuring out their career choice.
Let’s take it a step further, what about the person who decides to start therapy or wants to engage in Life Coaching. In respect to therapy, I’m talking about the person who isn’t forced into therapy, but the person who decides for themselves that they want to engage in therapy.
The following steps can be helpful as you explore your why regardless of the underlined reason.
Reflect on your purpose
- What makes you feel alive
- What do you gravitate towards
Identify your values
- What principles are non-negotiable in your life
- How do you want to show up in the world
Examine your experience
- What moments in your life felt most fulfilling
- What challenges have shaped your perspective
Ask purposeful questions
- What impact do you want to make
- Why do you do what you do beyond material gain
Look for patterns
- What reoccurring themes or passions connect your reflections
Write a personal statement
- Summarize your “why” in a simple and clear sentence
By understanding your “why” you can make more intentional decisions, overcome obstacles with greater resilience, and create a sense of fulfillment in your personal and professional life.
